Peter - Against All Odds
The book is a unique human story of a young man's fight to regain
independence following an appalling road accident which left him
bereft of everything except his brain.
Peter was a patient in Stoke Mandeville Spinal Unit
way back in 1983 and was unusual in so far as he had to go to the
intensive care unit every night because he used a ventilator and
at that time, ventilator dependent patients could not be accommodated
overnight on the spinal unit. Eventually, Dr.Frankel arranged with
a colleague (Mr.Peter Teddy at Oxford Infirmary) for our son to
have lung pacemakers fitted (a new invention) which meant he could
be free of the ventilator and was able to be on the spinal unit
day and night.
Although it was never mentioned, we know that Jimmy
Savile provided the funding for the pacemakers and necessary operation
to insert these as the NHS did not cover such things. My book is
Peter's life story both before and after his accident. It would
be of special interest to spinally injured people trying to return
to independent living in the community and also professionals involved
in their care.
All profits are being devoted to Peter's favourite
charities The cost per copy if purchased through me is £11.00 including
postage and packing (UK)
I am also happy to talk to anyone who just wants
some encouragement about living with severe disabilities or their
nearest and dearest about coping
