I
spent much of my formative years listening to my parents crackly
gramophone, singing along to Hank Williams` Hey Good Lookin` & ‘Howlin’
At The Moon’. I soon got hooked on Country music and the likes of
Jim Reeves, Johnny Cash & Skeeter Davis were particular favourites
in those early days.
As a teenager I played the French Horn in the Oxfordshire Music
School Orchestra under Muir Mathieson, ran Disco roadshows, went
to a weekly Country music club as well as singing Country in various
hostelries! How`s that for a wide mixture of tastes?
I moved to the Aylesbury area in the 1980’s and have been involved
with Aylesbury United FC since that time. A part change in lifestyle
occurred following a heart attack on New Year`s Eve 1995. It was
during that stay in hospital that I became aware of Stoke Mandeville
Hospital Radio Station.
I had been broadcasting on BBC & Independent Radio Stations since
1988 and a then member of SMHR, Andy Baxter, invited me along. Knowing
how the radio helped me as a patient, I joined SMHR in 1997 and
this enabled me to share music and knowledge with the listeners.
The radio station caters for just about all musical tastes - a bit
like yours truly!
More personal changes were to follow and, after a short enforced
break from the airwaves at the latter part of 2006, I returned in
early 07 to co-present The Magazine Show (6 to 7pm Fridays) with
my ‘bestest’ friend Stella Withey. We are never short of things
to say!
I produce and, along with Stella, present my first musical love,
My Kind Of Country (7 to 8pm Fridays) which is now approaching 600
weekly shows. We include new releases, number ones and other hits
from past decades, go under the covers (but don’t tell the nurses),
plus a round-up of the current Top Ten of the world’s most popular
music - Country music. . . .
Take care because we care - Dave G.
